TOWERING Wallaby Izack Rodda is certain to sign a new two-year deal with the Queensland Reds and replacing his worn-out Toyota Camry may be his first treat.
POCOCK CONCERN: Neck injury may keep star out of clash
The big lock all but dismissed flimsy rumours of a move to the NSW Waratahs by saying his heart was with his Reds’ squad-mates of two seasons.
Rodda, 22, grew up in Evans Head in northern NSW but the proximity to Queensland meant his rugby breaks have come with Ipswich Grammar, Easts, Queensland Country and Brad Thorn’s Queensland Under-20s.
“I’m still in talks but I’m definitely getting closer (to an announcement),” Rodda said.
“Staying in Queensland is definitely enticing.
“I love all the boys there and the culture that’s growing and it’s close to home as well.”
Rodda’s high workrate is as admirably blue-collar as his 10-year-old car which has clocked up 295,000km on his rugby journey.
“It’s got me to where I am...forget Bluetooth where you’ve got a CD player for music,” Rodda said.
Rodda’s immediate task is a bigger performance against South Africa at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night if he holds off the selection challenge of Rory Arnold.
“Some of the replays (against the All Blacks) were definitely hard to watch when you see yourself going that one pace rather than at real speed,” Rodda said.
“It’s good to see so you can address it.”
Rodda knows where the forward formula against the Springboks must start: “You have to bring that physicality and set piece reliability.”
