MELBOURNE Rising has snared a sixth successive bonus point victory to secure finals action with a 34-13 win over Canberra Vikings.
Rising burst out of the blocks to post four of its five tries inside the first 25 minutes before the Vikings closed to within 13 points midway through the second half.
But a Luke Burgess touchdown ensured Melbourne would keep its unbeaten run intact.
Utterly dominant after a devastating opening, Melbourne was tested throughout the rest of the match but had enough poise to again succeed.
Tries to Jack Debreczeni, Paul Alo-Emile, Mitch Inman, Burgess and Telusa Veainu — who has scored a competition-leading eight times — illustrated Melbourne’s enviable firepower.
The Rising led 26-8 at half-time after its scrum monstered Canberra in the first 40 minutes to have the contest under control.
An all-Rebel front row of Cruze Ah-Nau, Tom Sexton and Alo-Emile dominated to ensure a steady flow of scoring opportunities for the Rising’s lethal backs.
But momentum-sapping sin-binning of captain and scrumhalf Nic Stirzaker and lock Cadeyrn Neville hindered Melbourne as the Vikings responded.
Strong performances from Joe Kamana, Lopeti Timani, Stirzaker, Debreczeni, Sione Taufa and Inman underlined Melbourne’s impressive depth.
The Rising has a bye next week before resuming against the Greater Sydney Rams in Sydney on October 11.
The club’s last minor round game is against Queensland Country at AAMI Park on October 18 — before it almost certainly will contest the 1 v 4 semi-final, armed with the chance to earn a home final.
