QUEENSLAND Country have claimed their first win of the National Rugby Championship, downing Greater Sydney Rams 24-13 in a tough clash at Ballymore.
JJ Taulagi scored the match-winning try to seal Country’s first NRC triumph.
While Taulagi’s dancing feet added the finishing touch to the 24-13 win it was the dominant Country scrum, powered by prop Greg Holmes that provided the muscle.
Holmes should have been man of the match as the Country boys manhandled the Rams at times, and it was this dominance that delivered a match-turning penalty try in the second half.
No. 8 Ben Adams was also a heavy contributor as Country ended its three-match winless start to the campaign.
Both sides had their chances in the second half.
Rams flyhalf Ben Volavola created several chances for his side and fullback Dane Chisholm was dangerous all night.
Fullback Taulagi was sin-binned earlier in the match for a dangerous tackle but finished on the end of the decisive final try in the corner after backing up winger Giles Beveridge.
QUEENSLAND COUNTRY 24 (Grasso, Taulagi tries, pen try; Brandon 3 con) d GREATER SYDNEY RAMS 13 (McKenzie, Chisholm tries; Volavola con)
