Fraser McReight signs new three-year deal in a boost for the Reds and the Wallabies

One of the world’s best flankers is staying with the Queensland Reds for another three years.

The Reds have received a huge boost ahead of Saturday night’s interstate grudge match with the Waratahs, with Wallabies star Fraser McReight signing a new deal that will keep him in Queensland until at least 2028.

The Queensland Rugby Union/Rugby Australia contract also ensures McReight – who reportedly rejected lucrative offers to play club football overseas – will be part of the Wallabies’ plans for the 2027 World Cup.

“I’m very happy to have my contract resolved for the next three years,” McReight said.

“I can concentrate on those good times ahead with the Reds, the Wallabies and my teammates.

“There were other offers but my heart has always been with the Reds and the Wallabies.”

McReight follows in the recent footsteps of Reds teammates Harry Wilson, Matt Faessler and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto in recommitting to the QRU and RA.

“There are some huge events ahead in rugby in this country. As a nation we are rebuilding and I want to be part of that,” the 26-year-old flanker said.

“At the Reds, we know we are really well coached and have taken our game forward from the foundations we built last year.

“We can express ourselves without fear as players, and I enjoy my attacking brain taking me there.

“Queensland is my home and it means so much to represent my family and friends. Playing for your country is the highest honour, and you get to represent where you come from with pride.”

Reds coach Les Kiss said McReight had grown as a leader.

“Fraser is not only one of the world’s best openside flankers, he has a really positive influence within the locker room and has taken on extra leadership responsibilities,” Kiss said.

“The re-signing of Harry Wilson, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Matt Faessler and now Fraser is great news for the Reds for years to come and it is the same for the strength of the Wallabies.”

The icing on the cake for McReight would be a Queensland win over unbeaten NSW in Saturday night’s Super Rugby Pacific showdown at Suncorp Stadium.

The Reds are desperate to make amends for last Sunday’s 43-19 loss to the Crusaders in Christchurch.

“Playing the ‘Tahs is such a great game. There’s a lot of tradition and history (between) two states and we’ve had a lot of good battles in the last few years with the ‘Tahs,” McReight said.

“They’ve got a great side who are undefeated, and they’re showing some awesome things.”
