PROFESSIONAL cyclist Matt Brammeier is lucky to be alive following a shocking high-speed collision with a service car during stage six of the Tour of Utah.
Brammeier appeared to have lost control of his bike as he approached a sharp left turn, failing to slow down enough to make the corner.
As fellow cyclists took the turn inside of two accompanying service cars, the England-born cyclist continued straight, colliding into the front car with brutal force.
Watch the collision in the video below.
The 30-year-old, currently riding for MTN-Qhubeka pro team, suffered extensive injuries to his ribs and pelvis according to team medic Dr Jarrad van Zuydam.
“Matt Brammeier was involved in a high speed collision with a vehicle during the queen stage of the Tour of Utah. Thankfully, Matt has suffered no head, neck or spinal injuries and is currently stable in hospital. His musculoskeletal injuries are significant, however,” van Zuydam said in a statement.
“He suffered rib fractures on both sides as well as a small pneumothorax. He also has fractures of the sacral and pelvic bones.”
Brammeier was attempting to catch up to the race leaders during the downhill section of the course.
It is still unclear what exactly caused the crash, however fellow cyclists told Fox 13 that Brammeier potentially could have avoided injury had he been able to brake sooner.
“This rider came through too fast and he went straight through the corner,” said fellow competitor Thomas Soladay.
“The rider was definitely kind of out of control in that corner,” said pro cyclist Jesse Anthony.
“So, that was a risk he was taking.”
The five-time Irish National Champion posted a photo to his Twitter page on Sunday saying he was “all good in the hood.”

At the time of the crash, Brammeier was riding in the final stage of the Tour of Utah, a race which covers more than 1100km and attracts professional cyclists from around the world.
Brammeier turned professional in 2006, and has competed for Wales at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and narrowly missed out on selection for the 2015 Tour de France shortlist for team MTN-Qhubeka.
