Tokyo 2021 Olympics live: Allyson Felix makes Olympic history in 400m final

In her fifth and final Olympics, Allyson Felix produced a fighting performance like no other. And it cemented her status as an all-time great.

Allyson Felix has fittingly produced one of the more courageous races of her extraordinary career to secure a piece of Olympic history.

In her fifth and final Olympics, the American superstar had the tough task of running from lane nine in the 400m final in her quest to win a 10th Olympic medal.

Despite the odds stacked against her, the 35-year-old hung tough to win the bronze medal which pushed her past the great Jamaican Merlene Ottey for the most women's track medals.

Defending Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo won her second title with ease, dominating the field to win gold in 48.36sec.

The Dominican Republic's Marileidy Paulino took silver in 49.20sec with Felix running 49.46sec in getting the historic bronze.

Felix, who has won an extraordinary 19 world championships medals, came to Tokyo with an Olympic medal haul of six gold and three silvers.

She will get an opportunity to add one more in the 4x400m relay on Saturday night.In the men's 500m Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei made up for his silver medal in the 10,000m by sprinting clear over the final stages to win his first Olympic title.

The field had been bunched on the bell but Cheptegei, the reigning world champion, was too strong winning in 12min58.15sec from Canada's Mohammed Ahmed (12:58.61sec) with America's Paul Chelimo taking bronze (12:59.05sec).

Race favourite Mohamed Katir, who was stunning with his heat victory, disappointed in eighth position.
