Australia’s domination of the world swimming championships just keeps on rolling.
Hard enough to beat as individuals, Australia’s wonder women are unstoppable when they team up.
On Thursday night – the golden girls were at it again – smashing their own world record to win the 4x200m freestyle world crown.
It was another astonishing performance – but no-one will be surprised because the Dolphins have been steamrollering their opponents all week long in Japan.
With Mollie O’Callaghan – the newly crowned individual world champion and world record holder – leading the team off in 1:53.66, the result seemed like a foregone conclusion after the opening leg.
The Aussies were still in front after Shayna Jack’s second leg but were overtaken by the United States when Brianna Throssell handed over to Ariarne Titmus for the anchor leg.
But no-one was going to stop the Terminator, who broke the 400m world record on Sunday.
Her closing leg split was an astonishing 1:52.41, leaving her opponents way behind.
The team’s combined tome of 7:37.50 lopped almost two seconds off the previous world record the Aussie set at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The US finished second and China third but it’s the Aussies who will head to next year’s Paris Olympics as short-priced favourites.
“We’re obviously pushing each other at training every day,” Titmus said. “To break a world record is really special to us.”
The Australians have now set four world records in Fukuoka – with O’Callaghan and Titmus involved in three each and Jack two.
After five days of competition, the Australian team sits at the top of the standings with nine gold medals.
That’s the most an Australian team has won at a world championships since the Dolphins scooped up nine at the 2007 titles in Melbourne in 2007.
Australia’s all-time record is 13 – set at Fukuoka in 201 and matched at Montreal in 2005, and with three days left there’s every likelihood that mark will be sunk.
