Two seconds doesn‘t sound like much but that’s what Peter Bol is aiming to lose over the next four months.
Australia‘s 800m star has a time in his head which he believes will ensure he carries on the momentum from the Toyko Olympics, confirming his status as one of the world’s best.
Bol, 28, broke the Australian record when he spectacularly won his Olympic Games semi-final in 1min44.11sec before finishing fourth in the final.
While he hasn‘t been focusing on the clock throughout a dominant domestic season that will change when he heads overseas next month to prepare for the world championships in Eugene, Oregon and the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Watch the live stream of Bol’s final domestic race on Saturday from 2.25pm night at the Brisbane Track Classic where he is looking to ramp things up.
“I have to be in 1:42 shape,” Bol declares. ”You have to be in that shape at the major championships and I back myself to be in that shape physically and mentally.”
Bol‘s coach Justin Rinaldi has no doubt Bol is capable of slashing two seconds off his personal best given his new-found confidence on the back of the Tokyo heroics.
“Our goal is to run 1:42, he was definitely in 1:43 shape at the Olympics but it‘s just that you’re running to win really, not running for a fast time,” Rinaldi said.
“For the Australian season we have held him back a little bit, he‘s not stressing about what time to run and just enjoying it.
“Once he gets to Europe he wants to have a red hot crack at it. It‘s only confidence, he was definitely in this shape in 2017 and has been in this shape for a while but it’s just confidence.
“He‘s running more aggressively and asserting himself, I think that is the main difference.”
Rinaldi points to the breakthrough season of British 800m runner Elliot Giles as a template for Bol.
“You watch the British guy Elliot Giles who is one of the best in the world at the moment and the difference is he‘s putting himself in the front of the race whereas in the past he was sitting at the back,” he said.
“I don‘t think he is any fitter, I think he is just more confident. It’s the same with Pete, anyone who is confident runs better.
“He doesn‘t have to prove himself to get into races now, he’s in there and people then give you a bit more respect too.
“When you fight for a spot in the race and if they don‘t know who you are they’re happy to push you around but if they know this guy Pete normally gets to the front, they let him go and won’t push.”
Bol‘s first international hitout will be at the Doha Diamond League meet on May 13.
