Australian Dolphins coach Rohan Taylor reacts to shock revelations of alleged Chinese doping scandal at the Tokyo Olympics

Australian head swim coach Rohan Taylor was tight lipped in his reaction to the alleged Chinese doping revelations that have shocked the swimming world on the eve of Paris Games, but expects a full review to take course.

Australian head swim coach Rohan Taylor expects a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the alleged doping scandal that has erupted around the Chinese swim team.

This masthead revealed earlier on Saturday that 23 Chinese swimmers were cleared to race at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 despite testing positive to trimetazidine a few months prior.

The athletes were cleared by doping authorities in China and the World Anti-Doping Authority who ruled the tests were adverse analytical findings due to contamination of the tests.

Taylor said the story was the talk of the pool deck at the Australian Open championships on the Gold Coast, news breaking during the final day heats session.

The Dolphins head coach was reluctant to discuss the details of the matter in great depth, but expected the revelations would come under greater scrutiny now it was in the public domain.

“There is not a lot of information, there are allegations but I am seeking to get more information,” Taylor said.

“We will talk to our people and see what we can find out.

“But right now there really is not a lot of clarity.

“Obviously there is a process they will go through to get to the bottom of it now that it’s known.

“I’m confident they will get to the bottom of it.

“They will go through a process and get to the bottom of what actually happened.

“We will let that run its course then there will be enough questions asked and information.

“We will wait and see.”

China broke Australia’s world record on the way to winning the 4x200m freestyle gold medal in Tokyo, with the Australian team taking the bronze medal.

Taylor said it was far too soon to consider medal reallocations based on the information presented in the media.

“We will wait and see. Don’t get ahead of ourselves here,” he said.

“We will see what happens then address that one.

“I want to let this run its course. It is very easy to jump ahead.

“I will have an opinion then (at the end).”
