Mr Rose was cleared to compete at the Paris Olympics only weeks ago and had been presenting at a cross country schooling session when he fell.

Posting on social media on Friday evening, Mr Rose’s team wrote: “As the saying goes peacock one day, feather duster the next.”

“After a fantastic week in New Zealand, Shane and Virgil secured their Olympic qualifications,” they said.

“This week, Shane was bought back down to earth literally.”

“During a cross country schooling session yesterday Shane suffered a nasty fall.

“Thankfully his horse was not injured in the fall.

“Shane is currently in ICU with a badly broken femur and a fractured pelvis and ribs. He also suffered a heavy concussion.

“Shane had surgery this morning to stabilise the femur and pelvis.”

They said Mr Rose was “in good hands” and had a strong medical team and support network.

“While the timing is unfortunate we are hopeful there is adequate time for him to recover and still be able to continue his preparation schedule for the Paris Olympic Games.”

The sport’s governing body was investigating Mr Rose after a complaint was made about an orange mankini he wore during a fancy dress event in February.

His skimpy outfit raised eyebrows at the Wallaby Hill Extravaganza in the NSW Southern Highlands when he rode his horse wearing only the Borat-famous garment.
