Queensland teen sprint sensation Gout Gout has proven there really is no limit to his skills - recording one of the fastest times by an under-18 Australian and conquering sprint champion Noah Lyles’ personal best in the 400m.
Gout, 17, more known for his speed across the shorter 100m and 200m races competed in the Joanna Stone Shield meet in Brisbane on Saturday.
It wasn’t a competitive outing for Gout, more a time trial to test where he was at after a recent training camp in Florida with Lyles, an Olympic champion and six-time world champion, and the American’s coach Lance Brauman.
But Gout doesn’t do things by halves.
He crossed the line in 46.20 seconds - almost a second quicker than Lyles’ PB for the distance.
Lyles is best known for 100m and 200m distances.
It is one of the fastest times run by an under-18s Australian in the past 35 years.
Jye Gilliard was second across the line in 46.65 with Daniel Blest third in 47.03.
Coach Di Sheppard said the result didn’t change the sprinter’s focus.
“Today was just a time trial,” Shepard said.
“He does one of these every year to test his speed endurance.”
Gout is no stranger to breaking records.
He made national headlines when he smashed the men’s national 200m record in a blistering 20.04 at the Australian All Schools Championships.
He is next expected on the track at the Queensland titles in March.
It was also confirmed this week the 17-year-old plans to race in the Stawell Gift.
Also on his calendar is the Australian Championships in Perth in April.
All his hard work is aimed at preparing him for the world championships in Tokyo in September.
