Despite the short gap between his 20th and 21st gold medals, it’s been a long road for Phelps. Having debuted at 2000 Olympics as a 15-year-old, he failed to pick up a single medal at his first games. In 2004 he claimed six gold and two bronze, before sweeping eight gold in 2008 and four gold and two silver in London. He has three gold in Rio so far, and is a chance at getting three more.
The GREATEST Olympian of all time has won his 24th medal! ð

On Tuesday, the five-time Olympian lit up social media thanks to a vicious scowl at South African rival Chad Le Clos before the 200m butterfly semi-finals.
On Wednesday, he beat Le Clos (1:54.06 sec) by more than half a second, sparking a rehashing of the original meme.

Unsurprisingly, Phelps was not the only American to win gold in the pools on Wednesday, with Katie Ledecky, 19, taking out the women’s 200m freestyle, touching in at 1:53.73 sec, ahead of Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom (1:54.08) and Australia’s Emma McKeon (1:54.92).
Here’s Ledecky with Phelps in 2006, when she was only nine years old and he was a two-time Olympian with six gold medals to his name.
