AN emotional Cate Campbell has poured her broken heart out in a touching message of thanks to the Australian public for their support after her 100m freestyle disappointment yesterday.

Campbell is going through the toughest moment of her career, trying to cope with the gut-wrenching result of her favourite event whilst trying to keep her Olympic 50m freestyle campaign alive less than 24 hours later.

The world No.1 produced a gutsy swim to qualify for tomorrow’s 50m freestyle final by ranking second in 24.32s from the semi-finals, then proceeded to break down in tears as she recalled the pain of her last 24 hours.

“Yeah it’s been really tough, I figured out I’ve been swimming for over half my life and half your life comes down to less than 60 seconds and it’s your fault, you screwed it up and I cop that on the chin. It was 100 per cent my fault,” Campbell said.

“There is such a thing as wanting it too much and trying too hard. I was called a ‘try-hard’ in school and I guess I just proved all my teachers right.

“You know it’s been incredibly tough but in saying that the support that I’ve received has been overwhelming.

“That’s what really, that’s what really touches me. I don’t think I’ve ever received this many hugs, I don’t think I’ve ever received this many messages of support.

“And people have come up and called me a legend when I’ve felt like an idiot which I think is the highest of compliments.

“I think the nicest thing someone ever said to me, I can’t even remember who it was, they said ‘people love gold medals but they love people more.’

“To hear that was really, really touching for me.

“So yeah, this is the first time I’ve cried in an interview (laughs) and it wasn’t talking about the result it was talking about the outpouring of support and I think that you know, Australia really came through when I needed it.

“The Olympic games are a bit like a soap opera. There’s highs and lows, there’s triumph and heartbreak and I’d just provided the heartbreak in that little narrative. You know, it’s entertainment when it comes down to it.”

Campbell’s younger sister Bronte also showed her fighting spirit, she qualified for the final in fifth position with a time of 24.43s.
