According to Code Sports, Agar was claimed to have grabbed the reporter ‘by the throat’ before verbally abusing him during halftime of the Warriors and Raiders clash.
Veteran journalist Phil Rothfield was present during the incident and called Agar’s actions “so wrong”.
“I’m sitting there and I heard a little brouhaha down the corridor. Richard Agar is an assistant coach with the Warriors. To get to the lift at half time, they walk through the press box to get down to the sheds,” Rothfield said on the Big Sports Breakfast radio show.
“Richard Agar has grabbed this poor fella by the throat and given him a dreadful spray.
“It was so wrong and to be physical like that is not on.
“I expect Richard Agar to issue an apology today.”
The journalist is set to report the incident to the NRL with a witness preparing to back up his claims.
The NRL is also reportedly set to check CCTV cameras for footage of the alleged incident.
Rothfield than explained the history between Agar and the journalist dates back several years.
Agar was the head coach of Super League club Leeds Rhinos between 2019 and 2022.
“I looked up Google and I put the journalist’s name in with Richard Agar and in 2022, Leeds were struggling and the journalist wrote a column urging the club to sack Agar,” Rothfield revealed.
There was another story I won’t go into about a blue with a referee over there.
“It was very, very unusual at half time when your mind should be on what you’re going to tell the players to try and sort out a feud.”
Warriors boss Cameron George says the club is aware of the incident.
“I’ll speak to Richard and I’ll speak to the NRL to find out exactly what happened and we’ll take it from there,” George said to News Corp.
