Broncos coach Michael Maguire has declared Selwyn Cobbo will remain at the club for the rest of the season despite the winger signing a deal to join the Dolphins in 2026 that will add plenty of spice to one of the competition’s hottest rivalries.
Cobbo signed a one-year deal to head across town after the Broncos couldn’t offer him the sort of money that other clubs were willing to pay.
But despite not playing first grade right now, Cobbo won’t be granted an early release, with Maguire adamant he remains in their premiership plans for this year.
“Selly (Cobbo) and I have spoken, and he wants to be here (for the rest of the year),” he said.
“He wants to win a comp at the Broncos, and in the short term, he’s got that opportunity.
“The competition is wide open – we all know that – and he knows that. He’s really focused on performing here. He’ll be at the Broncos for the rest of 2025.
“It’s always tricky when you’re dealing with salary caps and the availability of what you can keep at the club.
“It’s a tough one because I really enjoyed coaching Selly. He’s a great man, but it’s part of the game, unfortunately, where not everyone can stay.
“One thing we do know is that he’s been training really well over the last month and he’s getting himself in really good shape to put himself in the position we’re after.”
The Dragons and Cowboys had been interested in his services after the off-contract winger fell out of favour at Red Hill, with Cobbo inking a one-year deal that could make him a huge target when the Perth Bears enter the competition in 2027.
Cobbo, 23, was in contention for the Maroons squad earlier this year but now finds himself in reserve grade, with the Broncos recently signing Grant Anderson and extending outside backs Kotoni Staggs and Josiah Karapani.
He joins an all-star backline at the Dolphins that is firing under new coach Kristian Woolf, with Cobbo repeatedly stating that he wanted to stay at the Broncos.
But the club couldn’t find the money to keep the prolific try scorer who made his NRL debut in 2021 and has played six matches for Queensland.
“The Dolphins have always said we are about continuing to build a roster that will make us one of the top teams in the NRL,” Dolphins chief executive Terry Reader said.
“Selwyn is an accomplished player who has done some amazing things at both Origin and NRL level already.
“But we believe he has untapped potential to go to even greater heights in our game and are excited about what he can do in a Dolphins jersey.”
