Tom Trbojevic decides future after $300k betrayal from Manly Sea Eagles
NRL superstar Tom Trbojevic has decided his future, with news.com.au exclusively revealing his shock contract call.
Tom Trbojevic is staying at Manly.
news.com.au can exclusively reveal the NRL’s most talked-about contract saga is over, with the star fullback set to sign a new one-year deal with the Sea Eagles on Monday.
In a stunning backflip, Trbojevic this week knocked back a lucrative two-year offer from Sam Burgess’ Warrington Wolves in the Super League to remain with his one and only club.
The handshake deal brings an end to weeks of intense speculation after the Brookvale favourite was left fuming when the club reneged on the terms of an agreed-upon $2.7 million, three-year contract.
Many believed the slight would be the final insult for the club legend, expecting him to abandon the NRL for the Super League.
His career with the Sea Eagles looked dead and buried after Manly bosses slashed $300,000 off the three-year deal that had already been agreed upon.
In a penny-pinching bombshell that looked certain to cost them a club icon, the offer was revised from $2.7 million to $2.4 million.
The move angered Trbojevic, who was already accepting a significant pay cut due to his recent injury history.
He was reportedly considering the Warrington offer, which was worth less than Manly’s revised deal, indicating his decision was not solely about money.
However, in a dramatic U-turn, Trbojevic this week accepted a revised one-year deal estimated at more than $900,000, ensuring he remains in the maroon and white for season 2027.
The 2021 Dally M Medallist, who is currently holidaying in Bali, seriously considered leaving Manly on the back of the $300,000 betrayal from his boyhood club in late September.
Trbojevic and Manly verbally agreed to a new deal in September which would have extended the Manly fullback’s stay until the end of 2029.
However once the deal was sent to the board and senior management for approval, the contract that was returned to Trbojevic to sign was worth $300,000 less than what was verbally agreed.
It is understood the three-year deal verbally agreed in principle was worth between $850,000 and $900,000 a season.
But in a shocking turn of events, Manly moved the goalposts two days later, tabling a revised offer worth around $750,000 a year – a sizeable reduction on his current $1.1m per year pay packet.
Turbo has proven on multiple occasions throughout his career that money is not his priority, instead he was hurt by what he considered a lack of respect from Manly in negotiations.
In recent years the Manly fullback has offered to take a $750,000 pay cut to help the club retain some of its young stars while he was sidelined with one of his many injuries.
The gun No. 1 also turned down a $30,000 payday to be the NSW Blues’ 18th man in Game 1 this year, so he was available to play for the Sea Eagles.
Trbojevic has previously stated he would never play against Manly.
