MELBOURNE Storm captain Cameron Smith says he is still a “fair way off” deciding whether he will finish his career a one-club legend.
The star hooker is weighing up a big offer to join the Brisbane Broncos next season.
But Melbourne recently countered with a $4 million-plus package to help keep Smith at Storm for life.
Coach Craig Bellamy recently said he was more confident Smith would stay than he was before Christmas.
But Smith said on Thursday his mind was far from made up.
“That’s Craig’s opinion – I am still a fair way off making a decision,” he said.
“At the moment I’m still undecided on what my future holds.
“I agree with Craig in that ideally a decision soon would be best for everyone.
“But on my part there is no rushing the matter.
“It’s an important decision for me and my family, so I want to make sure it is the right one.”
Melbourne bosses want the matter resolved before the start of the NRL season.
But Smith said he did not want to be rushed.
“I guess there was a slight feeling that way (leaning towards Brisbane), but there was never a certainty,” he said.
“I’ve spoken to Craig a couple of times since then.
“Ideally I’d love to get it out of the way as soon as possible.
“But that might take a little bit longer.”
The Queensland and Test captain reiterated his decision would come down to what is best for his young family.
“It’s discussions with my wife and what we feel is best for our family,” he said.
“I think it’s important at our age and where my family is at with three young kids that we make the right choice.
“There are other factors to consider, but that’s the most important right now.”
