Sonny Bill Williams has declared he is “travelling home” amid contract talks linking him to the Sydney Roosters.
The star has been playing with the Toronto Wolfpack in the UK Super League and has been based near Manchester with his wife and four children.
But the Wolfpack, who signed him for a $10 million two-year deal, has pulled out of the remaining games in the Super League this year.
Williams said on Friday night that he was leaving the UK despite getting his children settled in school here.
“It’s been a crazy few days in our household. One minute we’re settling the kids into schools over here, next minute we’re travelling home,” he said on Twitter.
“No matter what the next chapter holds as long as we have Allah in our hearts we’ll be fine. #AlwaysAlhamdullilah #ExcitedForQuarantine.”

Williams and his family would be subjected to two weeks’ quarantine in Australia if they went straight there, or longer if he went via New Zealand.
People returning to Australia must pay $3000 per person and stay in government ordered quarantine hotels.
Flights back to Australia from London cost up to $14,000 per person and take up to 60 hours because of reduced services due to COVID-19.

But NRL boss Peter V’landys has said he would do anything to help get Williams back into Australia.
“He’s a big brand and he’ll attract a lot of attention to our sport,” V’landys said on 2GB.
“We’ll help them in any way we can but we certainly won’t be providing any financial assistance. That goes for any club, not just the Roosters.”
