Monday Bunker: James Roberts’ ugly act deserved a send-off

James Roberts is facing two weeks out for his late shot on Broncos winger Corey Oates, and the Monday Bunker crew can’t believe how lightly the flyer got off for his ugly act.

Monday Bunker - James Roberts takes early plea

South Sydney flyer James Roberts was a man on a mission against his former club Brisbane on Friday night, but his high octane performance will likely cost him several weeks on the sideline.

Roberts was handed a Grade 2 dangerous contact charge for a late shot on Broncos winger Corey Oates in the side’s thrilling 22-20 victory at Suncorp Stadium.

The Rabbitohs centre faces a maximum three-week suspension but will cop a two-week suspension if he takes the early plea.

Speaking on Monday Bunker, host Tim Gilbert couldn’t believe how lightly the NRL Match Review Committee came down on Roberts.

“I thought five, six weeks because it was so premeditated,” Gilbert said.

Rabbitohs club great Mark ‘Spud” Carroll believes Roberts’ act could cost South Sydney their season.

Fellow panellist and Daily Telegraph reporter Fatima Kdouh was livid at the decision, saying Roberts should have been sent off for the ugly act.

“What have we had, 23 rounds of football and that was probably one of the cheapest things I’ve seen on the football field all year,” Kdouh said.

“That shot where you see Corey Oates’ eyes glaze over is one of the more shocking things I’ve seen happen this year.

“I can’t believe he wasn’t sent off and I can’t believe he’s only getting two weeks considering apparently how much we care about concussion and protecting players.”
