NRL teams round 24: Klese Haas debut, Jarome Luai, Siosifa Talakai return, KFC SuperCoach NRL analysis

Penrith and Cronulla welcome back key attacking weapons, while the Titans will unleash the younger brother of a Broncos star in their final home game. Who’s in and who’s out for round 24.

The Titans will unleash the younger brother of Brisbane Broncos star Payne Haas, with damaging forward Klese Haas to make his NRL debut.

Klese Haas will pull on a Gold Coast NRL jersey for the first time in Sunday’s last home game of the season against Newcastle.

With no chance of making the finals and little but pride to play for, Titans coach Justin Holbrook has decided to hand Haas his NRL debut on home soil at Cbus Super Stadium.

Haas, 20, has played six Hostplus Cup games for Tweed Heads this season and punched out 80 minutes in the five of those.

While NSW Origin star Payne plays big minutes in the front row and is renowned for his tireless efforts in the middle, Klese is an edge backrower and more of an attacking threat.

He showcased his strong carries when playing in an NRL pre-season trial for the Titans against the Broncos and has been developing his game this season in the lower grades.

After a strong Hastings Deering Colts campaign, Haas was promoted to the Hostplus Cup and then the Titans’ top 30 before the August 1 deadline instead of next year, paving the way for his NRL debut this season.

A graduate of the Future Titans System, Haas has re-signed with the Gold Coast until 2024 and said it was a dream to play for his local NRL club.

“It’s a dream come true, to be honest,” Haas said. “I got to see the Gold Coast all the time because I lived in Bonogin and Cbus was just down the road.

“Always seeing heaps of people going there, I really wanted to play at that stadium and I’m just really beyond grateful for the opportunity that I’ve gotten at the club.

“Obviously, I was originally supposed to come in next year, but being able to come in for the last little bit of the season, it’s going to be really good for me.

“I just want to learn as much as I can from all the boys. Like what they do week-in, week-out for each game and even after the game with recovery and everything.

“I’ll try to learn as much as I can.”

Holbrook said Haas was a hot prospect for the Titans who had plenty of talent.

“Klese is an exciting prospect and we’ve identified that from a young age,” he said.

“He has impressed in our trial match earlier this season and he has further developed through the year in his time with Tweed.

“Klese is an exciting Gold Coast junior. He has a great work ethic and continually works really hard to improve his game. He’s got some classy footwork and skill.”

Haas will come into the Titans’ 17 at the expense of Dolphins-bound veteran Jarrod Wallace, who has been dropped to the reserves for what would have been his final home game for the Gold Coast.

Despite lacking dummy-half options, Holbrook has resisted the urge to shift halfback Tanah Boyd to hooker and he will retain the No.7 jersey.

That leaves rookie halfback Toby Sexton once again out of the team after he made his first appearance for Tweed last weekend, scoring a try in the second minute against Townsville.

Centre Patrick Herbert has been ruled out after suffering a knee injury and concussion against the Dragons while Phil Sami will be named, but must pass concussion protocols to play.

The Titans were disappointing in a 46-26 loss to the Dragons which was their 11th loss in as many games on the road. All four of their wins this season have come at home and they will be looking to end a poor season on a high against the lowly Knights.

SHARKS STAR RETURNS

Cronulla will welcome back strike centre Siosifa Talakai from a shoulder injury against the Bulldogs on Saturday.

In a massive boost for the Sharks, the NSW State of Origin tearaway has been cleared to return after a fortnight on the sidelines.

Hard-running forward Dale Finucane has also been named despite suffering a rib cartilage injury in Cronulla’s big win over Manly. Dynamic fullback Lachie Miller has retained the fullback spot with Will Kennedy (ankle) and Kade Dyles (calf) unavailable.

Connor Tracey has been rested after suffering from a concussion against the Sea Eagles.
