State of Origin 2025: Queensland legend Greg Inglis appointed assistant coach of Maroons women’s team

Greg Inglis haunted New South Wales throughout a 32-game State of Origin career. Now, the NRL and Queensland legend is officially back in Maroon after launching his coaching career.

Queensland Origin legend Greg Inglis is officially launching his State of Origin coaching career.

Inglis has been appointed as an assistant to Queensland women’s coach Tahnee Norris for this year’s women’s State of Origin series.

It will be Inglis’ first formal foray into the world of Origin coaching since he terrorised the NSW Blues on the field.

Inglis, 38, carved out a stellar 32-game Origin career for the Maroons from 2006-18, scoring 18 tries and playing a key role in Queensland’s decade of dominance.

He retired from the NRL in 2019 following 263 games for Melbourne and South Sydney.

Inglis has been a regular attendee at Camp Maroon throughout men’s and women’s Origin series over the years.

But he will now join forces with Norths Devils premiership-winning coach Dave Elliott and Meg Ward in assisting Norris this year.

The Maroons women claimed a memorable 2-1 series victory against NSW last year and will be looking to retain the Origin shield in 2025.

“I’m looking forward to working with both Greg and Dave, and with Meg returning as well, we have a really experienced group of coaches who also understand what this jersey means to our players and people,” Norris said.

“Greg’s always been an advocate for women’s rugby league.

“He’s previously been around our camps as a mentor, so to have the opportunity to put him on full time this year is going to be a great asset for us.

“The knowledge that he brings is just second to none. I know our outside backs in particular will learn a lot from him.”

Elliott piloted the Devils to last year’s Hostplus Cup premiership and State Championship double before losing his job to the returning Rohan Smith.

But he has managed to pick up a new gig with the Queensland women’s team.

“The proof is in the pudding with the Hostplus Cup from last year and the NRL State Championship that he won with the Devils,” Norris said.

“I’m excited for him to be involved in this level of the women’s game for the first time.

“He has been around a long time in the Hostplus Cup, plus he’s had experience working with NRL teams as well.

“That experience, and the knowledge he will be able to share with our players, is going to be invaluable for us.”

The 2025 women’s Origin series kicks off at Suncorp Stadium on May 1 before moving to Sydney’s Allianz Stadium on May 15 and finishing in Newcastle on May 29.
