The South Sydney Rabbitohs are rallying around shattered superstar Latrell Mitchell, declaring he and brother Shaquai will be given all the support the club can offer in the wake of a car crash tragedy that claimed the life of their teenage cousin.

The Rabbitohs’ senior players are due back at training on Monday, but chief executive Blake Solly said if the Mitchell brothers “need time off, that will be approved”.

It comes after the family woke to news on Saturday that their 14-year-old first cousin was in a stolen car with four other boys driving around Jubullum Mission, in the NSW far north between Casino and Tenterfield, when the driver lost control and hit a tree.

Their cousin and a 15-year-old boy were declared dead at the scene.

Mitchell was one of a group of players expected back at training this week along with Sean Keppie, Cody Walker, Damien Cook and Tom Burgess.

“He is due back tomorrow,” Solly said.

“At this stage we expect him back, but as with any of our players in a situation like this, if they need time off, that will be approved.

“It’s a terrible tragedy – the Club is here to support Latrell, Shaq and the family.”
