Former Maroons star Scott Prince has been appointed Brisbane’s new NRLW head coach as the Broncos beefed up their women’s program ahead of the competition’s expansion in 2023.

Prince will lead the Broncos into next year’s 10-team NRLW premiership after replacing two-time title-winner Kelvin Wright.

The Broncos have also beefed up their commitment to the women’s game by appointing ex-coach Paul Dyer to an expanded role.

Dyer, the Broncos’ inaugural NRLW coach, will oversee the club’s female football program as Brisbane looks to dominate the blossoming women’s game in Queensland.

Prince, 42, played 300 NRL games for the Cowboys, Broncos, Tigers and Titans during a distinguished career which also included five Origins for Queensland and four Tests.

He was an assistant coach to the Broncos NRLW team in 2018 and 2022 and was named coach of the year in 2021 after guiding Valleys Diehards to top spot in the BHP Premiership.

Prince played 50 NRL games for the Broncos across two stints (2001-03, 2013) and has been working with the club’s community programs since 2016.

Now he will take the next step in his coaching career by taking charge of Brisbane’s women’s team.

“I feel like the time is right for me personally as I have had a number of roles in the women’s game but nothing compares to the excitement I have about coaching the Brisbane Broncos NRLW side,” Prince said.

“The journey will be challenging, however with hard work, a proven coaching staff around me, and a committed squad of players, I know we can build a successful program.

“I love working in the women’s game – the players have a genuine desire to learn and improve – and as coach, that’s all you can ask for.”

The Broncos have dominated the NRLW since its inception in 2018, winning the first three premierships and finishing minor premiers in four out of five seasons.

They struggled to find form in this year’s second competition and Wright made the decision to return home to New Zealand, opening the door for Prince’s ascension as the Broncos opted to expand the women’s program.

Dyer has worked closely with the women’s team and will now shift more energy into ensuring Brisbane is a leader in the booming game.

“This is a really exciting day for me, the Broncos have been a huge part of my life and I am certainly very appreciative of the faith the club has shown in me to lead our NRLW and game development programs,” he said.

“I have had a long association with the women’s game, both as a head coach and administrator, with some of my closest relationships being formed through my time with the Jillaroos and Broncos NRLW program.

“Our NRLW program has had some wonderful success over the years, but we also recognise there are some areas that we need to improve. I am looking forward to reconnecting with the playing group and working closely with Scott Prince and the rest of our staff to ensure we deliver a world class football program.”
