NRL’s monster salary cap payouts for Tom Trbojevic and Latrell Mitchell’s Origin injuries

Manly and Souths are set to receive big payouts after Tom Trbojevic and Latrell Mitchell were injured in Origin camp – but are unlikely to be able to use the money.

Manly have received a payout of about $300,000 from the NRL for Tom Trbojevic’s pectoral injury but that will do little to help with their top-eight aspirations.

South Sydney are also expected to receive about $100,000 after Latrell Mitchell’s calf injury sidelined him long-term.

The payouts are part of the NRL’s policy to help soften the financial blow club’s receive if they lose a player through a long-term injury in the representative arena.

Mitchell was injured at training in the lead-up to Origin I and missed seven games for the Rabbitohs while Trbojevic tore his pectoral in game two.

It is separate to the potential salary cap relief club’s can receive.

Manly have been able to look to secure a player worth about $350,000 to cover for their injured star but have been unable to find a replacement.

The Tigers were unwilling to let go of Tommy Talau despite Talau joining Manly next year.

It now leaves Manly unable to fill the gap before the mid-year trade window ends on August 7.

The Tigers are also going to wait until the end of the season to get their hands on 2024 recruits Samuela and Latu Fainu who Manly would have released early if the Tigers wanted.

Aside from Talau, the Sea Eagles have also reached out to a host of players including Lachlan Miller, Daine Laurie and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck but barring a late change of heart from rival clubs they will proceed without adding a player for the rest of the season.

The 17 club bosses have been invited to a meeting with the state bodies to be hosted at NSWRL headquarters at Sydney Olympic Park on Tuesday.

It is understood the clubs will strongly push back against the current length of State of Origin camps.

Clubs want the Origin period to cause as little disruption as possible to the NRL season.

Respective state bosses Ben Ikin and Dave Trodden are likely to run through their funding submissions they have lodged with the NRL.

A host of clubs have been looking to strengthen their stocks before the mid-year window ends. Parramatta, Cronulla and Melbourne have been among the clubs on the lookout.

Much like Manly, the Dragons also had money to spend after being granted cap relief for Cody Ramsey’s career threatening injury.

The Dragons had intended to use the money on an outside back but with none available, they have been allowed to retrospectively use the relief after they signed Paul Turner. The Dolphins used their cap concession from Tom Gilbert’s season ending injury sustained in Origin I to buy Josh Kerr.
