Five players have been sensationally charged by the NRL match review committee from Saturday’s controversial game between Canterbury and Wests Tigers at Accor Stadium
Bulldogs hooker Reed Mahoney was charged twice along with teammate Sam Hughes while Wests Tigers players Aidan Sezer, David Klemmer and Alex Sayfarth are also in strife.
Halfback Sezer is facing a monster suspension.
Mahoney was hit with a grade one dangerous throw on Wests Tigers player Alaimalo Solomon along with an additional grade one contrary conduct charge.
He could plead guilty to both charges and face a combined fine of $4300.
Should he fight the dangerous throw charge before an NRL judiciary panel, Mahoney would face a two-game suspension.
Mahoney was third-man-in during a late on-field flare-up with Seyfarth but somehow avoided being sin-binning.
Hughes was charged with a grade one contrary conduct for making contact with referee Kasey Badger.
The Bulldogs forward broke from a scrum during the first half and looked to push Badger as he followed the ball.
Badger does appear to get in the way of Hughes’ progress but the NRL has a stringent rule warning against the perils of making any contact with a referee.
Hughes faces a $3000 fine or two game suspension.
Wests Tigers players Klemmer, Sezer and Seyfarth were also charged.
Sezer is confronting a massive suspension of four of five games for grade three dangerous contact on Canterbury forward Josh Curran.
The NRL insist Sezer’s charge is a grade three dangerous contact and not a hip drop.
A long ban for their experienced playmaker would be a crippling blow for Wests Tigers.
Klemmer was charged with grade one contrary conduct for arguing with Badger and is looking at a $3000 fine or two-game suspension.
Seyfarth was hit with a grade one striking charge for the incident with Mahoney and will be fined either $1500 or $2000, depending on his plea.
