NRL 2021: Broncos to honour Alex Glenn with testimonial match

After 13 seasons and 267 games, Brisbane will honour one of its great servants with just the third testimonial match in Broncos history.

Broncos veteran Alex Glenn has addressed speculation surrounding his retirement after the club announced a testimonial game in his honour, to be played next month.

The 32-year-old will become just the third ever Bronco - alongside Greg Dowling and Gene Miles - to be honoured with a testimonial match, when Brisbane come up against North Queensland in a pre-season trial match at Dolphin Stadium on February 27.

The Broncos said the blockbuster clash will allow fans and members “a chance to thank Glenn for his loyalty and commitment to the club”.

After an impressive 267-game career, including a rollercoaster stint as club captain last year, Glenn is preparing to play his 13th NRL season with the Broncos after debuting in 2009.

And with his current contract expected to expire at the end of the 2021 season, Glenn said had yet to make a call on his future.

“I’ve not really (thought about it) at the moment because the last week, there has been so much going on with the missus and the baby,” Glenn said.

“The next month leading into the testimonial, I’ll find myself reminiscing on the career that I’ve had.

“It’s just a huge opportunity to give back to the fans who have been there for me.

“I’m not saying this is going to be my last year – it’s just going to be one of those things that will pan out throughout the year.

“I’m looking forward to ripping in with the boys and staying out on the field more than I did last year.”

The testimonial match will double as Brisbane’s dress rehearsal ahead of the 2021 season opener, with a near full-strength side expected to be named.

It will also be the first time these two teams meet after the Cowboys sunk the boot into the Broncos, defeating them 32-16 in the final round of the 2020 season.

Glenn – who welcomed his third born into the world earlier this week – said he was grateful to the Bronco for the testimonial match.

“To be the third player at the Brisbane Broncos to get a testimonial game is a huge honour for myself,” he said.

“I still remember coming through the Brisbane Broncos system and playing a trial game here (at Dolphin Stadium) which is quite surreal to come back and now play a testimonial game.

“I have many people to thank for putting this forward.

“As a team, we are working really hard and preparing well for the 2021 season and this game against the Cowboys will allow us to fine tune our preparations.”
