The Sharks halfback has been sent for scans to assess the severity of the damage with hopes the injury won’t rule Hynes out for a long period of time.

Prominent social media account NRL Physio posted on X, formerly Twitter: “Nicho Hynes has been carried off Sharks training with what could be a serious ankle injury. Will head straight for scans - hopefully more a lateral ankle sprain which can be super painful initially but overall not as bad as it looks. Not good signs though.”

The Sharks confirmed the brutal news with an official media release on Monday afternoon.

“Hynes injured an ankle late in today’s Sharks training session at PointsBet Stadium and will be sent for scans to assess the extent of the issue,” the statement read.

“The Sharks will communicate more information when available.”

The injury comes on the heels of a horror recent run for Hynes who, after being dropped from the NSW Blues side after Game 1, missed a game winning field goal from less than 20m out directly in front in golden point.

He then had to watch in horror as Matt Burton’s third field goal attempt from just under 40m out hit the post and went in to snatch a 15-14 golden point victory for Bulldogs.

Hynes slumped to the turf in the defeat as fans piled on.

It was the second straight game that Hynes wasn’t able to get the Sharks over the line with his boot, having missed a sideline conversion against the Dolphins in round 15 when he missed a sideline conversion which would have sent the match to golden point.

The Sharks have lost five of their past six outings, but still sit fourth on the ladder with a 10-6-2 record.

Hynes was dropped from the Blues side after a lacklustre showing during the series opener with his kicking game coming under heavy fire.

His miss from directly in front against the Bulldogs had rugby league fans feasting as they savaged the Sharks playmaker.

Several fans said it was “why Nicho Hynes wasn’t selected for Origin 2”.

Others asked if he was “the least clutch player of all time”, while others called it a choke.
