Monday Buzz: Illegal elbow theory rocks Brock Jarvis v Marlon Paniamogan bout

A close video inspection of the Marlon Paniamogan vs Brock Jarvis boxing bout has revealed a theory that it could have been an elbow – not a punch – that caused the crucial blow.

Filipino boxer Marlon Paniamogan suffered a broken jaw in his loss to Brock Jarvis last week.

A closer inspection of the fight video revealed a theory that it could have been an elbow – not a punch – that caused the break (see video above).

Probably a grade three with the NRL’s match review committee.

His trainer Jeff Fenech however insists it was a left hook – and not the elbow – that broke his jaw.

Read on for Phil Rothfield’s full highlights and lowlights from the weekend.

STUNNING NUMBERS BEHIND NRL’S 20-TEAM AMBITION

The usual suspects will be criticising any suggestion of NRL expansion to a 20-team competition.

Whether we have enough quality players is the big question mark, although the Dolphins are proving the doubters wrong.

For the long-term future of the game and the financial potential, it is a no-brainer.

The reason the AFL has a better TV deal than the NRL is that they provide more content.

They have an extra game each week and their matches go longer.

They have a truly national sport with two teams in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and south east Queensland. They will soon go into Tasmania.

The NRL TV deal would increase by a minimum 20 percent from having 10 games.

It means an extra hundreds of millions of dollars in extra revenue over a full broadcast deal.

It would attract tens of millions in new sponsorship.

Having a Pacifika team based out of Cairns is a fantastic idea.

I’d be throwing in the Perth Bears as well – and maybe even another team in Queensland, based out of a heartland area like Ipswich.

NRL GETS TOUGH ON TIME WASTING

The NRL is always looking to speed up the game.

That’s why Head of Football Graham Annesley sent the 17 clubs an email last week around the time limit (one minute and 40 seconds) for conversions and penalty-goal kicks.

“As these delays impact stoppage time and elapsed time, and could in some cases be interpreted as tactical delays, the NRL will be taking a more stringent view of non-compliance,” Annesley wrote.

“When referees call time-out after one minute 20 seconds as per standard procedure, the referee will remind the kicker there is only 20 seconds remaining for the kick under the rules.

“Please note that future breaches of the time limit, without reasonable cause, will result in breach notices and significant sanctions.”

SICKENING OATES INJURY SHOWS BAN INSUFFICIENT

This is the X-ray that shows why the NRL banned shoulder charges years ago.

Corey Oates suffered a broken jaw against the Cowboys on Friday night and will miss eight weeks.

He was rushed to hospital on Friday night and had surgery to wire the jaw on Saturday.

Cowboys fullback Scott Drinkwater collected the veteran winger with a shoulder charge.

It was careless rather than intentional.

Drinkwater was charged with a grade three offence.

He misses only three weeks while Oates misses two months.

Somehow the penalty seems insufficient.

HIGHLIGHT

Dolphins enforcer Felise Kaufusi is reviving memories of David ‘cement’ Gillespie, Terry Randall, Michael Wicks and Charlie Frith – some of the most feared defenders of the last 40 years. A week after cleaning up Brandon Smith and several of his Roosters team mates, Kaufusi crash-tackled Raiders forward Hudson Young with another bone crunching tackle. The impact was so loud you could hear it on TV.

LOWLIGHT

The ridiculously over-the-top sin-binnings of Hudson-Young (70th minute) and Sean O’Sullivan (74th minute) for nothing incidents at Redcliffe. Similar incidents don’t normally even warrant a penalty let alone use of the bin.

SPOTTED

Jason Saab is still two months away from a comeback from his ACL injury at Manly. He has bulked up and is already reaching a speed of 37.5kmh at training. This could be his year.

SPOTTED

The Dolphins have now firmed from $81 to $29 to win the premiership after another fabulous performance against the Canberra Raiders on Saturday.
