NRL 2020: Laundy family backs new Canterbury Bulldogs board after new directors are announced

Three new faces have been added to the Bulldogs board as three former members worked away, and it may have saved the club from a full blown civil war that threatened the support of their major sponsors.

The Laundy family have reaffirmed their commitment to the Bulldogs after sweeping changes to the club’s board were announced on Friday.

Craig Laundy told the Saturday Telegraph the family would retain its major sponsorship rights with the club despite Canterbury’s recent boardroom turmoil. The upheaval threatened the final two years of the $2 million front of the jersey sponsorship.

“It’s good to have this resolved,” Laundy said.

“We look forward to working with the board, (coach) Trent Barrett and the players. We are concentrating on making sure next year is a far better year for the Bulldogs all around than this year was.”

Canterbury has been plunged into turmoil after a coup removed Lynne Anderson as chair and led to fellow directors Paul Dunn and John Ballesty standing down earlier this month after an extraordinary general meeting was called by a group of disgruntled members to oust the trio. The meeting never eventuated after the trio walked away.

Their replacements – Jim Koutsouklakis, Andrew Gifford and Peter McMahon — were announced on Friday. John Khoury remains as chair.

Khoury said the additions would “bring a fresh energy and individual skill set and most importantly a real passion for the Bulldogs”.

“We have spent a great deal of time over the past week interviewing various people who we think would be the right fit for our board and I’m delighted that we have been able to announce our three new directors,” Khoury said.

Koutsouklakis is a director on the Canterbury Leagues Club board and has 20 years experience in finance and business advisory. McMahon returns to the board having been a director between 2011-18. He was sat on the Leagues Club board from 2014-18 and is a leading real estate lawyer.

Gifford is an experienced finance director.
