The Penrith Panthers star was put on the spot and ambushed during an interview with serial radio prankster Intern Pete from the Kyle and Jackie O Show.
Without messing around, Cleary was asked straight up if he was dating the Matildas superstar. He was quick to shut down the talk as he looked to keep the focus on Sunday’s Grand Final against the Brisbane Broncos.
“Nah, nah, we’re not going to get into that,” he said.
Unfortunately for Cleary his teammate Jarome Luai didn’t get the memo and was an open book when asked about the romance rumours that have taken Australia by storm.
Luai was first asked which Panthers player would be most likely to date a Matildas player, he responded with: “Nathan Cleary, shhh.”
Intern Pete wasn’t done digging for gold as he went deeper, asking if the Panthers players discuss the romance in the rooms.
“Yeah, we’re into them, definitely,” Luai said.
“He was a bit shy about it, that’s all,” he said referring to Cleary’s refusal to speak about the romance rumours.
“I’ve been trying to get some information out of him.
“I wanna see my bro happy, he’s on the lookout for some love.
“Yeah, but we’ll see how they go.”
Cleary addressed speculation about his private life in early September when he told News Corp he hopes to keep his private life out of the public domain, saying he is “annoyed” at the recent interest in his life away from the football field.
Cleary acknowledged he was aware of the ongoing rumours and is annoyed by the situation and interest in his personal life.
“It is what is, it’s a little bit annoying to not have a private life but I like to not talk about it too much and keep anything I can private,” he said on Monday at the NRL’s finals launch.
“Things take off pretty quick with social media but I’ll try to keep a private life if I can.”
