SPORTS Editor-at-large Phil Rothfield reveals his highlights, lowlights and talking points from a bumper weekend of sport.

HIGHLIGHT

Being at Randwick on Saturday afternoon to witness the mighty mare Winx become a legend of Australian racing with her sensational win in the Doncaster.

LOWLIGHT

Four weeks ago I wrote in this column that the bunker was rugby league’s best innovation in 20 years. Today I plead guilty of jumping the gun. Yes, the decisions are much faster but sadly the same old mistakes are being made in just about every game.

SAM TV

Sam Burgess has been in hot demand with channels Nine, Seven and Fox Sports all wanting to sign him on an exclusive TV contract. He is expected to do a deal with Fox Sports this week.

NO GO FORWARD

St George-Illawarra are struggling to score points because their forwards are not making inroads. Not one of their starting forwards or bench players made 100m against the Cowboys. The Dragons are averaging just eight points a game this year.

EIGHT’S TOO MUCH

The Knights are becoming more competitive every week but their Blues State of Origin halfback Trent Hodkinson missed EIGHT tackles against Melbourne Storm, which is not helping their cause.

SEVEN PAYOUT

There will be one big winner out of the Mitchell Pearce scandal. The Bondi man wrongly accused of filming Pearce is in negotiations with Channel 7 lawyers for a six-figure defamation payout.

SON STILL SHINES

The stinging criticism from colleague Rebecca Wilson certainly didn’t ruin the weekend of Blues Origin skipper Paul Gallen. Gal watched proudly from the sideline as his four-year-old son Kody made his footy debut for De La Salle in Sharks juniors on Saturday before heading to Campbelltown and knocking off the Wests Tigers.
