AN idiotic Canterbury fan is facing a lengthy ban - possibly life - for throwing a glass bottle at the Canberra interchange bench.

The fan was quickly identified by police and ejected from Belmore Sports Ground, where Canberra defeated home side Canterbury 22-8.

It appears the drama occurred after Bulldogs forward Josh Jackson was sin-binned during the second half.

The Daily Telegraph understands the irate fan threw a bottle of Wild Turkey at the Canberra bench, nearly hitting forward Frank-Paul Nuuausala, who was on a recovery bike.

“We have identified an individual and our fans also helped us identity who the person is,” said Bulldogs CEO Raelene Castle.

“We have dealt with it really quickly and the person was ejected. Absolutely not acceptable. We believe we know who the person is.”

Asked was it a glass bottle, Castle said: “I believe it was. You can’t get glass in here unless you have snuck it in. That’s also unacceptable.”

Canterbury will hold meetings on Tuesday to determine a possible punishment for the fan.

“The Bulldogs have dealt with it very professionally,” said Canberra coach Ricky Stuart.

“The police did a great job. Canterbury have jumped on it - you don’t need those types of supporters at our game.”

The incident has also highlighted the lack of CCTV technology available at Belmore Sportsground.

It is understood there are no CCTV cameras at the iconic yet ageing suburban ground, a situation that could hamper efforts by the Bulldogs to identify the offender beyond the assistance of fans.

It is unkown what effect this will have on any future police prosecution.
