Every player’s journey to State of Origin looks different.

For a number of Origin stars, they’ve been representing their state at an elite level since their junior days, putting on the NSW Blue or Queensland Maroon in the U19s and U20s.

The 2012 series was the first time in which State of Origin featured an U20s showcase, at the time featuring players from the now-defunct National Youth Competition.

It would become an annual one-game battle for the Darren Lockyer Shield, before being put on pause during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

Upon return, the format would be rebranded to U19s.

See below every player who has played U19/20 State of Origin – and the stars who made the jump to the game’s greatest arena.

The 2025 Origin series marks a historic moment for the U19s format, with Robert Toia set to become the first player to make his State of Origin debut having also represented Queensland in the U19s in 2022.

Kulikefu Finefeuiaki could become the second to do so if he’s promoted from 20th man into the Maroons squad, having represented the U19s in 2022.

There are plenty more interesting takeaways from this deep dive:

• In the eight years of the U20s fixture, 18 NSW players and 26 Queensland players have gone on to play State of Origin. This will become 27 when Beau Fermor takes to the field for Queensland.

• Game I of the 2025 series features 12 players who represented NSW or Queensland in U19s/20s (Mitch Moses, Latrell Mitchell, Reece Robson, Brian To’o, Stephen Crichton, Valentine Holmes, Cameron Munster, Lindsay Collins, Harry Grant, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, Beau Fermor, Robert Toia).

• Broncos centre Gehemat Shibasaki is the only player to have played in three U20s State of Origin matches. He represented the Maroons from 2016-2018.

• The 2014 U20s fixture boasts the most successful pool of graduates, with five NSW players and seven Queensland players going on to represent their state at senior Origin level.

• By contrast, 2016 was the least successful U20s fixture in terms of graduates, with Jaydn Su’A the only player across both NSW and Queensland to play State of Origin.
