The Brisbane Broncos are fighting to stay in touch with the NRL’s top eight following six losses in seven games that has thrust the spotlight on Red Hill.
Coach Michael Maguire is under the pump to get a star-studded Broncos team firing and back into the NRL premiership mix.
Maguire has had some standout performers like Origin stars Payne Haas and Pat Carrigan, but there are plenty of players not pulling their weight at the club.
We have rated every Broncos player at the halfway point of the 2025 NRL season as they prepare to get their campaign back on track in Saturday’s M1 derby against the last-placed Gold Coast Titans at Suncorp Stadium.
ADAM REYNOLDS – Had one of the greatest games of his career against the Bulldogs in round 8 but since then, Reynolds was off the boil against Penrith, Souths, the Dragons and Manly. The skipper needs to lift. RATING: C
REECE WALSH – Returning from a knee injury against the Titans. Has struggled to find his groove and currently looks a shadow of the player that lit up the NRL in 2023. Opposition teams have worked him out. Needs to get fitter and find some variety in his game. RATING: D+
KOTONI STAGGS – Missed the opening month with a quad problem but since his return, Staggs has tried to lift the Broncos every week with his energy. Averaging 112 metres a game and has been spirited in defence. Showing leadership. RATING: B-
JESSE ARTHARS – One of Brisbane’s best this season. Brisbane’s leading tryscorer with 11 from 12 games and was rewarded with selection in Queensland’s extended squad for Origin I. Better suited to the wing rather than fullback. RATING: A-
PAT CARRIGAN – Typically tireless and a great one-two punch with Payne Haas. Averaging 145 metres and 34 tackles per game this season, incredible numbers few forwards can match. Started the season at prop but his move to lock this week is where he belongs. RATING: A
CORY PAIX – Outstanding pre-season and started round 1 in dashing form before losing the No. 9 jumper to Billy Walters, only to reclaim it against Manly last week. Needs to get more creative around the rucks. RATING: C+
SELWYN COBBO – Dumped this week after featuring in all 12 games this season, scoring five tries and filling in for Walsh at fullback. Averaging 16 runs and 138m a game but Maguire wants more. RATING: C+
PAYNE HAAS – On track to win a sixth Paul Morgan Medal as Brisbane’s player of the year. Averaging 160m and 30 tackles a game from 61 minutes, busting a team high 82 tackles. In career-best form and can’t do much more. RATING: A
BEN HUNT – Brisbane’s big off-season signing is yet to deliver. Only five try-assists and one line break in 10 games at five-eighth and is now sidelined with a hamstring injury. Needs to produce more when he is back. RATING: D+
BRENDAN PIAKURA – His form has mirrored Brisbane’s erratic start. Lost out to Jack Gosiewski for a back-row starting spot in round 1 before suffering suspension and concussion issues. The best line runner at the club, there are several more gears in him. RATING: E
EZRA MAM – Sat out the first nine rounds due to his drug driving suspension before bursting back into the NRL with a stunning effort against the Dragons. Has only played two games but that’s his fault and he let his team down. RATING: C-
KOBE HETHERINGTON – Got his big chance to impress when handed Carrigan’s No. 13 jumper for round 1 but has been dropped to the bench for the Titans clash. Averaged just 63 metres and needs to find more attacking punch to complement his stinging defence. RATING: C-
BEN TE KURA – Finally got a chance against Manly last week after spending the first three months terrorising rivals in the Queensland Cup. The hulking 205cm prop could be a real weapon off the bench in the back half of the season. RATING: D-
DEINE MARINER – One of the disappointments of 2025. Scored 17 tries last season, but has managed just eight games this year and appears to be on the outer with coach Michael Maguire who wants Brisbane’s fastest player to work harder. Lost out to Josiah Karapani for a spot against the Titans. RATING: E
FLETCHER BAKER – Could go down as one of the worst signings in Broncos history if he doesn’t find something. Picked up from the Roosters to help replace Tom Flegler but has flopped badly, managing just two games this season and appears to be of Hostplus Cup standard. Off-contract and unlikely to be retained. RATING: F
MARTIN TAUPAU – Veteran prop played just 18 minutes off the bench against the Roosters in round six. Then became embroiled in the Michael Maguire social-media storm, liking a post bagging the Broncos coach, prompting the parties to part ways. RATING: F
JAIYDEN HUNT – Honest toiler who is playing a bit-part role under Maguire. Started in the back row against the Roosters in round 6 but has struggled to claim a spot in the top 17 every week. Off-contract at season’s end and fighting for his future. RATING: E-
GEHAMAT SHIBASAKI – An unlikely starter in round 1 after joining the club on a train-and-trial deal and hasn’t looked back. Played all 12 games and scored six tries, although four of those were in the first five rounds and his form has dipped since. RATING: B
COREY JENSEN – Mr Reliable has played all 12 games from the bench and finally gets starting shot against the Titans. Averaging 80m and 24 tackles a game from 38 minutes on the field. Nothing flashy, but never lets the team down. RATING: B
JORDAN RIKI – Seems to have gone backwards since his 2023 breakout season. Punching out big minutes and averaging 34 tackles but the Broncos need more from their edge strike weapon. RATING: C+
BILLY WALTERS – Struggling to find his place under a new coach. Has been there every week but started the season on the bench before being given five goes at starting and then being sent back to the interchange. Doing plenty of defensive work when he is on the field. RATING: C+
XAVIER WILLISON – Another player finding his feet under Maguire. Has been used off the bench in the front row and back row and started five games on the edge, scoring three tries. Has plenty of upside, just needs to rip and tear more. RATING: B-
JACK GOSIEWSKI – Earned a starting spot in the back row until suffering a broken arm at training after six games and hasn’t recovered. Scored two tries but wasn’t posting big numbers in attack or defence. RATING: C
TYSON SMOOTHY – Professional 18th man. Played in the 2023 grand final but can’t find a place in the 17 with the current Paix-Walters dummy-half combination. RATING: C-
JOSIAH KARAPANI – Gets his first game of the season following Cobbo’s relegation. Has produced big numbers for Burleigh in the Hostplus Cup and needs to get busy. NO RATING
BLAKE MOZER – Missed the start of the season with a shoulder injury that may require surgery and hasn’t been able to get a shot in the NRL due to mixed form with Souths-Logan. NO RATING
