South Sydney’s worst nightmare is coming true with the club confirming disaster has struck during two separate incidents.

South Sydney captain Cameron Murray could miss the bulk if not all of the NRL season after the club confirmed he suffered a serious ankle injury in a horror morning at Rabbitohs training.

Superstar fullback Latrell Mitchell is also set to miss his playing return in Saturday’s Charity Shield clash with St George Illawarra after leaving the training track with a hamstring injury.

Murray was sent for scans, with fears he had ruptured an achilles tendon that could mean up to six months on the sidelines.

“Rabbitohs captain Cameron Murray has a suspected ruptured achilles tendon suffered at training today (19 Feb). He will get scans, however he is not expected to be available to play in the coming months,” a club statement said.

“Rabbitohs fullback Latrell Mitchell has been ruled out of this Saturday’s Charity Shield with a hamstring complaint. He will get scans to determine the extent of the injury.”

It’s a horror blow for Murray, 27, who was set to play in his team’s season-opening clash with the Dolphins having made a strong recovery from a wrist injury suffered while playing for the Kangaroos during the Pacific Nations tournament at the end of last year.

Mitchell, meanwhile, was named for the Bunnies for the first time since last July in a strong squad for Saturday’s annual Charity Shield clash.

The fullback missed last week’s All Stars game through suspension but was ready to go after a foot injury ended his 2024 campaign before this latest setback.

He was able to walk from the training field but has a history of hamstring injuries. He has torn tendons in his left hamstring twice, in 2020 and 2022.

He has less than three weeks to recover before the Rabbitohs’ Round 1 clash against the Dolphins on March 7.

As first reported by Code Sports, onlookers at the Heffron Park training session were “stunned” when the two stars went down with injuries within minutes of each other.

After noting how injuries contributed to Souths’ 2024 season trainwreck, physiotherapist Brien Seeney, the injury analyst behind the high profile “NRL Physio” account on X, called Murray’s injury a “brutal” blow for the club.
