Cameron Munster’s wife Bianca opens up on her husband’s rollercoaster NRL journey

Bianca Munster, wife of Queensland State of Origin captain Cameron, opens up on their journey through love. The challenges, the triumphs, and what could be in store for the future.

Her husband is 80 minutes away from achieving one of the biggest triumphs of his rugby league career: captaining his state of Queensland to State of Origin glory.

Bianca Munster chats with Phil Rothfield about how her romance with Cameron started, how he bounced back from hitting rock bottom, and his surprise abilities in the kitchen.

Phil Rothfield: Ok, where did you meet Cameron?

Bianca Munster: The old fashioned way… on social media!

PR: And how did the great man propose to you?

BM: Cam proposed in 2022 straight after the World Cup. He actually carried my engagement ring in his backpack to every game he played around England so I wouldn’t find it. We did a bit of travel afterwards but he waited until we got to Lake Como, Italy to propose, as my late mother was Italian and he wanted to honour her and her heritage.

PR: What’s he like around the house? Does he mow the lawns? Help with the dishes? Cook?

BM: He’s actually very hands on. He enjoys cooking, not so much the cleaning aspect. He usually bounces from one job to another without finishing the first job, his brain is always going a million miles an hour. He is a great gardener, although we did get fake grass so it is less maintenance!

PR: How proud was the family when he was appointed QLD captain?

BM: Extremely. He’s come so far personally and professionally, it’s inspiring to have watched him grow and become the man and footballer he is today. No one’s more passionate about QLD and this game more than him. He was made for this role! But I know I’m biased!

PR: Footy players have heaps of ups and downs; it must be hard sometimes?

BM: It can definitely be challenging to navigate all the emotions. I think for Cam, our children are a real grounding factor for him. Regardless of whether he’s had a rough day, injured himself, or lost a grand final, he’s still a dad. At the end of the day he comes home the same regardless of what’s happened. He’s an incredible father, and he’ll be the first person to say he’s a dad first and footballer second.

PR: Cameron had some issues around Covid time that were well publicised. What a great comeback! I guess you’ve seen it first-hand. It’s been impressive?

BM: It was a really tough time, for not only Cam but our families. There was a lot of online abuse and hate which went on for a long time — even still to this day. There was a moment where it was just the two of us and he said to me he didn’t want to play football anymore and he lost the love for the sport. There was a lot of personal reflection and work he put into himself to reignite the fire in his belly to come back bigger and better. It took a great deal of support and trust from people who genuinely cared about him and this helped him understand what direction he wanted to go and what he needed to do to get there. A huge factor was also our first son Jaxon being born later that year. Becoming a parent really opens your eyes and changes your whole perspective on life. I saw this effect on Cameron first hand.

PR: How do you find living in Melbourne away from the rugby league spotlight?

BM: I grew up on the Sunshine Coast so it was a big transition for me moving to Melbourne. I think we forget how lucky we are with Cam being out of the spotlight down here. Victorians are big on AFL so Cam is overlooked a lot which feels normal. It’s not until we go back home to QLD or NSW we notice such a big difference with fans.

PR: Would the family be open to moving elsewhere for his career?

BM: We love Melbourne, it truly feels like home. All our kids were born here and the longer we stay, the harder it is to leave. Although football isn’t long term, and the prospect of further opportunities, for not only Cam but our whole family, is something we would definitely have to consider.

PR: And finally, a dumb question ... who wins Wednesday night and by how many?

BM: QLD by 4!
