IT’S the big game within the biggest games in town.
The Broncos, Reds and Lions are all negotiating new stadium hiring conditions with Stadiums Queensland.
It manages and operates Suncorp Stadium and the Gabba among other major venues on behalf of the State Government.
The jockeying to achieve the lowest hiring fees and best conditions they possibly can for their next agreement will accelerate the moment that one of the clubs gets close to signing off on a deal.
Suncorp Stadium is managed by AEG Ogden, which also operates the Brisbane Entertainment Centre among its list of venues across five countries.
It is also the company that negotiates with the Reds, Broncos and Roar on hiring agreements.
Suncorp Stadium general manager Alan Graham says providing future-proofed venues for hirers was part of the challenge for the new agreements.
“What we have worked very hard on is relationship-building. We approach it from the point of view of how we need it to be a win-win situation,” he said.
“We need to work on new technology, for example.
“How the big shift is to connectivity and staying in tune with how people communicate these days … these are things we do with our major hirers, so we are marching in step with them.’’
The Broncos want to review current terms and conditions with a view to entering into another long-term agreement.
The five-year deal for the Reds to play at Suncorp Stadium runs through until the end of 2016.
“We’ve opened up some discussions now because we spend a fair bit of time talking to Ogden about maximising earnings and our partnerships,” QRU chief executive Jim Carmichael said.
