Brett Morris keen to add to family’s massive try-scoring record in milestone match

As if Friday night’s blockbuster between the Roosters and the Rabbitohs needed any more hype, the match will be a hard won milestone for winger Brett Morris.

NRL finals begin with Souths, Roosters blockbuster

When it comes to tryscoring families, it’s hard to go past the Morris clan.

Between the twins, Brett and Josh, and their dad “Slippery” Steve, the grand total is 411 in 781 matches — and counting.

Sydney Roosters winger Brett has scored 153 tries in 249 games, Cronulla’s Josh 137 in 285, and Steve 121 in 247 during a stellar career with St George.

“Not bad for a family, is it?” Brett said.

The 33-year-old twins can add to the tally this weekend and it will be a special occasion for Brett, who will play his 250th NRL game Friday night in the qualifying final against arch rivals South Sydney at the Sydney Cricket ground.

Josh will then line up Saturday night for Cronulla in their elimination final against Manly at Lottoland.

Brett has overcome multiple injuries to post his milestone during stints with St George Illawarra, Canterbury and the Roosters.

“It’s pretty cool,’’ Brett said. “It’s taken a fair while. I’ve seen some guys who debuted the same year who have gone on to play 300 games and well over 300 games.

“There has been a long list of injuries along the way but I finally chalk up 250. It’s a great achievement and something I will look back on fondly at the end of my career.

“They are huge milestones but you just want to go out there as a team and worry about doing your job and trying to get a win. I try not to worry about these kinds of things.

“After the game, with the family, there will be a little celebration. But for me, it’s just another game. I have been playing for a long time now. You roll in from week to week.

“As a kid, you grow up dreaming of playing one game. So to go and play that many for myself and my family is pretty cool.

“I was part of Josh’s 250th game. We weren’t doing the best at the time at the Bulldogs but we managed to win and make that really special.”

Josh was full of praise for his brother.

“It’s a fantastic achievement for Brett to reach 250,” Josh said. “He’s had a few ups and downs with injuries but he’s persevered and am happy to see him reach the milestone.

“It’s testament to his hard work and dedication. I still think he is one of the best finishers in the game and he’s still got plenty of good football and tries left in him.”

Milestones aside, Brett has a big game to focus on against the Roosters’ 111-year rivals.

The Rabbitohs are the only side to have beaten the Roosters twice this season.

“The first time was the first game of the year and everyone was still working out combinations and there was a bit of rust there,” Brett said.

“(Last Thursday) they were better than us in some parts of the game but they are not hard to fix. We have seen the video and seen the areas we need to tweak a little bit.

“I don’t think there’s too much wrong with the club here at the moment or the footy that we’ve been playing.

“We don’t need to hit the panic button. We just have to nail down our jobs.”
