But when American midfielder Yedlin was shown a straight red card by Mike Dean at St. James’ Park, his Spanish coach made his feelings clear.

Benitez made the indication for VAR with his fingers to suggest Dean had made the wrong decision.

Wolverhampton Wanderers went on to score with almost the last touch of the game as they snatched a 2-1 victory against the 10-man Geordies.

Newcastle had survived with 10 men for more than 35 minutes on Sunday after the sending-off of DeAndre Yedlin, but Matt Doherty pinched all three points with the winner deep into injury time.

The result lifted Wolves up to 10th place while Newcastle were left down in 15th, three points above the relegation zone.

“Scoring with almost the last kick of the game gives them no chance to get back into the game - so it’s pretty special that way,” Doherty said. “Once the keeper saved Jota’s shot I can’t really miss it - it’s pretty special.” Diogo Jota put Wolves in front after 17 minutes but Ayoze Perez headed the equaliser six minutes later.

Yedlin was sent off for a foul on Jota on 57 minutes and Wolves almost took the lead when Raul Jimenez beat goalkeeper Martin Dubravka only to see his effort cannon back off the woodwork with 15 minutes to go.

Newcastle must have thought they had done enough for a draw as the match ticked into injury time.

Dubravka made a number of good saves in the match and when he stopped Jota’s late, late attempt, it looked like it might be enough for a point. But the ball went straight into the path of Doherty, who headed in the rebound to clinch Wolves’ sixth win of the league season.

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez said Newcastle should have had a penalty when Perez was elbowed, and called for video assistant referee to be introduced immediately.

“It was key to the game - the red card and the elbow on Ayoze Perez. We need VAR now. In this game it would have changed everything,” he said. “We were doing enough to control the game. How can you explain those decisions to all our fans? We did everything we could do for winning this game.” “We have lost three points today and we deserve to win.” It was Wanderers’ first win in the top flight at Newcastle since 1959, when they last won the title.
