NEWLY crowned national champions Amanda Spratt and Katrin Garfoot headline a strong Orica-AIS team for the Santos Women’s Tour, starting Saturday.
The pair won the road race and time trial at last week’s national championships in Ballarat and are looking to continue their winning ways in Adelaide.
They are joined by Rachel Neylan, who was third in Sunday’s road race, Lizzie Williams, Tayler Wiles and Chloe McConville for the four-stage race, which begins at Mount Torrens tomorrow.
The team is going for its third consecutive victory in the race after Loes Gunnewijk triumphed in 2014 and Valentina Scandolara won last year.
“We’ll be aiming for stage victories and also the overall,” sport director Gene Bates said.
“We’ve got a couple of riders that are moving really well at the moment and over the course of the four days there will be plenty of opportunities on tough courses that we can really make a difference.”
This year’s race has an upgraded UCI ranking meaning more international riders will be on the start line.
“It’s now a UCI sanctioned race and they’ve really done a top job of professionalising the race,” Bates said.
“They’ve got international teams coming out and the standard of racing is obviously going to be a bit higher than we’ve seen in the last two years.”
The Santos Women’s Tour begins with a 95km Stage 1 which starts and finishes in Mount Torrens.
Stage 2 is a criterium around the Adelaide East End before the People’s Choice Classic, Stage 3 is 100.8km in the Barossa Valley and Stage 4 is a criterium at Victoria Park on Tuesday night.
