Why Supercars star Broc Feeney must defy history to extend win streak at the Townsville 500

Fresh off five straight race wins, Supercars leader Broc Feeney must conquer a new beast when he comes to Townsville. The rising star of the V8s also opened up on his hopes for a NASCAR debut.

Fresh off five straight race wins, including a historic performance at the Triple Crown in Darwin, Supercars leader Broc Feeney must conquer a new beast when he comes to Townsville next week.

Since graduating into the main category as a talented teenager in 2022, Feeney is still yet to claim his first Supercars race win at the Townsville 500 – one of just three tracks in the series he has not mastered.

However the 22-year-old isn’t unfamiliar with winning on the Reid Park track.

In 2021, during his incredible season in the Super2, Feeney was far too strong for the field as he finished fastest in every session over the weekend including the two races.

Feeney said he was motivated to break his three-year drought with his first Supercars race win at the Townsville 500.

“We’ve been on a bit of a roll. I think we’ve won seven of the last nine races, and it’s just about trying to execute,” Feeney said.

“The team’s doing a fantastic job. The cars have been rocket ships. But Townsville wasn’t our best round last year, so hopefully we can go a little bit better this year and sort of take what we’ve learnt over the past few months into that.

“If we’ve got a car capable of third, we’ll achieve third. If we can win, we want to go there and win.

“For me, I think I’ve won five (races) in a row now. I’d love to try and get a few more in Townsville and try and win the event.

“I’ve never won a race in Townsville, actually, in the main game. So hopefully we can achieve that next week. I think it’s just Sydney, Townsville and Gold Coast – so I’ve got a couple still to tick off.”

Feeney was outstanding last time out in Darwin, adding another 111 points to his buffer at the top of the driver’s championship standings – where he now leads Triple Eight teammate Will Brown by 183 points.

Brown is taking time away from the team ahead of the Townsville 500 to make a NASCAR cameo in Chicago.

It’s a path Feeney has been open about following if he can secure an opportunity to race in the United States.

“Yeah, it does (interest me). I’d love to go do a road course at some point,” Feeney said.

“Obviously it sort of requires a bit of backing and some good sponsorship and that sort of stuff. So I’ll wait and see.

“I’ve sort of said, if the right opportunity comes up, I’d love to go and do it. But at the moment I don’t have the opportunity there.

“So we’ll keep in touch with some people over there, and hopefully something comes to fruition.”

Feeney said his highlight in Townsville was his dominance in the Super2 back in 2021, but that he always relished getting back to North Queensland.

“I always just look forward to Townsville. It’s a fun event. It’s the middle of the year, you get up there and the weather’s nice – the event is always a lot of fun,” Feeney said.

“The footy is on Saturday night, there’s a rodeo going on, there’s burnout pads and everything. So there’s going to be plenty of action going on all weekend.

“For drivers it’s always fun, it’s sort of the first street track of the year, but as fans it’s such a cool place to go and watch.

The Townsville 500, which includes Races 20, 21 and 22 of the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship, is being held at Reid Park from July 11-13.
