Braking News: Pye hits concrete wall at 200km/h, accuses rival of deliberate hit

As if there wasn’t enough Supercars feuds. In a bitter aftermath to the year’s most controversial and dramatic race, Scott Pye has blown up at a rival after his altercation with a concrete wall.

Scott Pye has claimed that a rival driver intentionally caused the crash that sent him smashing into a concrete wall at over 200km/h in Perth over the weekend.

In a bitter aftermath to the year’s most controversial and dramatic race, Pye stormed out of the Team 18 garage when Jack Le Broq entered enemy territory to apologise for his part in the terrifying shunt.

Pye then made the sensational claim that the Matt Stone driver sent him into the wall on purpose as payback for an aggressive blocking move.

“I am gutted for our partners and team,” Pye said.

“When I first started moving over, there was no overlap, but I misjudged Jack Le Broq’s closing speed and obviously there was an overlap pretty quickly. I, of course, wouldn’t try and run someone off the road intentionally but I did misjudge that and I blocked too hard.

“Before I had time to react to the first touch, Jack had decided I was going into the wall and he turned left sending me right.

“He came and apologised to someone in my team, but knowing what he did is probably the worst part.”

Tensions between Team 18 and Matt Stone Racing were already high after Le Broq’s teammate Todd Hazlewood collected Team 18 driver Mark Winterbottom in the opening round.

BRUSHED

Anton de Pasquale got the cold shoulder from Shane van Gisbergen during a frosty post-race podium in Perth.

Van Gisbergen was in no mood to exchange niceties with his Ford rival following an on-track whack and turned his back on the Dick Johnson Racing driver in the lead up to the podium presentation.

We can’t say we were surprised that De Pasquale gave van Gisbergen a whack after the Red Bull driver was revealed as the most marked man in the sport by News Corp Australia last week.

Nonetheless, van Gisbergen was far from impressed with the collision that came after he passed De Pasquale to steal the lead in the third and final race.

TOUGH JUSTICE

You have to feel for Cameron Waters.

While going outside the track limits to stay in front of Will Davison was not strictly legal, his crime did not warrant a punishment that would end up costing him not only a race win but a podium.

Cameron Waters’ crime did not fit his punishment.
Cameron Waters’ crime did not fit his punishment.

In an eye for an eye scenario, Waters should have only lost a spot at worst for crossing the kerb to re-take the lead – but the five-second penalty ended up sending him from first to fourth thanks to a field bunching late safety car.

A Formula One style redress would have been far more fitting.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Will Davison might have been famously slammed as DJR‘s No. 2 driver by Shane van Gisbergen – but he again outperformed his teammate Anton De Pasquale.

Breaking through to win his first race since 2016, Davison is now only 47 points behind De Pasquale and is threatening to upstage the driver DJR bought to replace Scott McLaughlin.
