Supercars: Broc Feeney ready to take on new finals challenge

In any other year Broc Feeney would have a hand on the title. While the new Supercars finals format has added a new challenge to conquer, the star is confident he can convert his domination into a championship.

Feeney qualifies for supercars final

Championship leader Broc Feeney knows he would have had “one hand on the trophy” leading into the Adelaide grand final if not for the new Supercars finals format, but he is determined to ensure a dominant season is not squandered.

The Triple Eight young gun heads into the title-deciding round this weekend as the top seed with a 20-point buffer on Ford rival Chaz Mostert, but his grip on the Supercars crown would have been much tighter under the old championship system.

Had the new finals series not been introduced, Feeney would have held a 286-point lead on his closest rival with the chance to close out the championship in the first of three races on the Adelaide street circuit on Friday.

Grove Racing’s Matt Payne would have been the next best in the championship standings, but he missed out on the final four under the new format.

Feeney has been the stand out driver of the 2025 season, boasting 13 race wins – nine more than the next best – Mostert and Payne – on four.

The 23-year-old said he appreciated the excitement the new finals series has brought for fans and he was confident the “cream” would still rise to the top in Adelaide.

“It would be easy to be complacent and say I would have been stoked if it was the old way, I would have one hand on it, but at the same time it’s a great opportunity to seal it one way or another this weekend,” Feeney said.

“(There’s) three races, I’ve got three extremely competitive guys behind me all fighting for the championship, so (from) a fan’s point of view, I totally understand it,

“I think the cream will rise to the top and the best man is still going to win.”

Feeney finished runner-up in last year’s championship to Triple Eight teammate Will Brown, who is also one of the final four in the Adelaide grand final along with Grove rookie Kai Allen.

He was one of the two race winners on the streets of Adelaide with Brown last year and he backed his race-winning and strong qualifying record this year to help deliver a maiden Supercars championship.

“We’ve won 13 races this year and we’ve got 16 pole positions so we know how to win races,” Feeney said.

“It was really important to get a win at Sandown last week, but on the 88 side we’ve done a great job all season to be right at the front and we’ve had a fantastic season.

“So, I’ve got all the confidence in the world that we can go out and win races this weekend and that’s what you’re going to need to do to win a championship.”

Brown acknowledged final four rivals Mostert and Allen were in the position to have their teammates, Ryan Wood and Matt Payne respectively, helping their title chase in Adelaide, but he said there would be no “favouring” either car at Triple Eight.

“I think you would be trying to help your teammate if you weren’t in the final four. You see other teams like Chaz’s and also Kai’s that have a teammate not in there,” Brown said.

“But for us, fortunately or unfortunately, we have two cars in the final four which is an amazing result, but we are both out there racing for a championship for ourselves.

“There is no favouring either car.”

Walkinshaw Andretti United star Mostert, also chasing a maiden Supercars championship, said the finals had “freshened” up the category.

“The last two rounds have been something that we are getting used to and I think from the commentators’ side and people watching at home, there is always a different storyline going on in the finals, which has really freshened our sport up,” the two-time Bathurst 1000 winner said.

“I’m excited to be in the first finals series, I’ve been in the championship hunt once or twice before but never been able to really make it to the final rounds so it’s a pretty unique position for me to be in and our whole team.”
