Supercars 2025: Broc Feeney opens up on losing Supercars title fight to Triple Eight teammate Will Brown last year

Triple Eight young gun Broc Feeney found it hard watching Will Brown revel in the celebrations of his Supercars championship win. He opens up on missing out in the title fight and how it’s driving him this year.

Triple 8 makes "bombshell move"

Triple Eight young gun Broc Feeney has opened up on the pain of watching his teammate Will Brown celebrate his Supercars championship win last year and how it has fuelled the fire in him to “get the job done” this season.

The 22-year-old admitted that he was left tinged with jealousy as his new teammate Brown revelled in his maiden series win in his first season with the Red Bull squad as he finished runner-up.

Feeney and Brown were the last two drivers in the title fight in the final round on the streets of Adelaide last year with the Toowoomba pilot sewing up the crown with a race to spare to underline an ultra-consistent year.

Triple Eight team boss Jamie Whincup said after the final race he hoped that missing out in the championship fight to his teammate would “burn a little bit” for Feeney leading into his 2025 campaign.

Now entering his fourth season with Triple Eight, Feeney said he had not enjoyed the feeling of missing out and he was determined to be the one doing the celebrating this year.

“It’s not that fun to be honest watching someone else get to do all the fun celebration stuff and all that,” Feeney said.

“But at the same time, Will did the job last year and he deserves it. I send him all his congratulations, but as I said it is always not that fun getting to watch someone celebrate something that you wanted to win.

“He (Whincup) doesn’t have to worry about that, there is never a doubt that the burn is always going to be there if I don’t get the job done.

“I am always here to win a championship, but the fire keeps getting bigger and bigger at the moment.”

Asked if he was a bit jealous watching Brown celebrate, Feeney said: “Of course I was”.

While he was second to Brown in the championship, Feeney had actually claimed more race wins (six) than Brown (five) and also out-qualified his teammate with five poles to two during the season.

He said there was plenty to learn from and build on from last year’s campaign.

“It was still a good year, there was still plenty to be proud of. But we fell short on what we wanted to do,” Feeney said.

“You need to learn a lot from last year, but this year is going to change quite a bit as well with how the new format works and I think we were really able to be strong in the back-end of the season (last year) and win when we needed to.

“It’s a new year, a new start, but a very similar team and my goal is always going to be the same and that’s to try and win the championship.”

After the pain of falling short in the championship, Feeney tried to switch off from racing at the start of his off-season break.

He launched back into racing this month at the Bathurst 12 Hour and the New Zealand Grand Prix.

“To be honest, I just tried to have some time off and switch off from it all,” Feeney said.

“Post-Adelaide I probably had about four weeks of not doing much which was much needed.

“I went boating, just stayed at home, went out to Norwell (Motorplex) a little bit and did some laps. Honestly, not (doing) much, just tried to hang out at home with some mates.

“Then I wanted to get back into it and do some races before round one so I did the 12 Hour, which although we didn’t finish, was a really strong weekend for me and pace wise and all that and then went over and did the (New Zealand) Grand Prix.

“I feel like I have done a fair bit of racing before round one and it’s a normal pre-season for me trying to get a few races in and make sure that I’m recovered before the season starts.”

Feeney has already identified the areas where he needs to improve if he is going to make the jump from runner-up to Supercars champion this year when the category will debut its new finals format.

“At the end of the day, Will won the championship on consistency last year …. obviously his performance to get a podium at every event was extremely impressive,” Feeney said.

“Obviously consistency (is important), but it is a lot easier said than done.

“It is going to change a lot this year, as I said, and you are going to have to be consistent to have a good spot to start the play-offs, but I think more importantly you are going to have to win races and not have mistakes in the finals series.

“I was very happy post-Tassie last year, we were top three in every round, we were able to rock up at Adelaide and win when we needed to (in the Saturday race).

“So there is plenty to be happy about and take into this year.”

This year will be Triple Eight’s last representing the General Motors brand after its shock pre-season announcement that it was switching to Ford for next year.

“For me, nothing is going to change this year. Hopefully we can have a fantastic year and finish our GM partnership off on a really high note,” Feeney said.

“Being the last ever (driver) to win a race in a Holden in Adelaide was awesome, so hopefully I can do the same and I think if you do the same at Adelaide you will probably be the champion as well.”
