Supercars 2025: Ford star Cam Waters on his new business venture and title chances this year

Tickford Racing’s Cam Waters has made a blistering start in pursuit of his maiden Supercars championship, and has revealed another passion keeping him busy.

Waters reflects on epic narrow win

He has created his own whiskey brand in his spare time away from racing and now Ford star Cam Waters is hoping to turn a season-opening blitz into a vintage year on the track as he hunts a maiden Supercars crown.

The Tickford Racing ace dominated the opening round at Sydney Motorsport Park.

He claimed three race wins and three pole positions to establish himself as the early favourite in this year’s championship race.

While he has long been regarded as one of the series’ top drivers, a Supercars title has eluded the Monster Mustang driver.

Waters was runner-up in the Supercars championship in 2020 and 2022 and has twice finished second in the Bathurst 1000.

The 30-year-old said his Sydney sweep had provided him with the perfect platform to launch a championship charge but he needed to consistently back that form up, starting at the Melbourne SuperSprint at Albert Park this week.

“It was a great weekend (in Sydney), a great way to start the year and it would probably be my best round to date in a Supercar,” Waters said.

“(It’s an) awesome way to start the year and really it’s just about keeping that momentum going now.

“From the middle of last year on, we took a couple of steps forward and we were fairly consistent in that back half of the year.

“I guess that set us up for this year and hopefully we can keep that going and be competitive at all different tracks.

“It was good to be fast at SMP but the test will be how good we are at the Grand Prix.

“I think we are in a good position to go for a championship. It’s a very different championship this year with the finals (format) but I’m not getting too ahead of myself.”

Waters dominates opening Supercars weekend

While he finished fourth in last year’s championship, Waters set the qualifying benchmark in 2024 when he took out the pole award.

Waters, who will team with Mark Winterbottom in the endurance races, hoped his qualifying strength would help put him in a strong position for the finals series later in the year.

“My qualifying is not going to hurt,” Waters said. “You just need to keep focusing on the next round and being quick through the year and making sure you’re fast at the end of the year when it really matters.

“A very different year to others but I think we are in a good position at the moment.”

Waters felt Tickford Racing was starting to reap the benefits from downsizing to a two-car operation last year from its previous four-car set-up.

“It probably took us a little bit (of time) to find our feet when we first went there (two cars) but I think through the year we improved each round and once we worked out what was going on, we were quite competitive and we’re only getting stronger,” he said.

Waters has developed his own whiskey brand, Waters Whiskey, at a Hobart distillery.

“I guess I always enjoyed whiskey and whenever I would celebrate that would probably be the first drink that I would go for,” Waters said.

“I thought, ‘Why not do my own one?’ So I teamed up with a distillery in Hobart and we’re just kind of doing limited edition batch runs at the moment.

“We did a batch at the end of last year that sold out in a couple of weeks, which was awesome, and we’re just going to do that throughout the year.

“I’ll try and grow that on the side and hopefully have a bit more success throughout the year and get to drink some more whiskey.”
