Six-time Moto GP world champion Marc Marquez suffered a scary high-speed crash during the second practice session for the Indonesian Grand Prix.

Top-level motorsport has returned to Indonesia for the first time in 25 years and there was drama in the second practice session on a sweltering afternoon on the new Mandalika circuit on the tropical island of Lombok.

The Spaniard had already had a couple of hair-raising wobbles on his Honda and went flying off his bike at speed at Turn 11 before tumbling over several times painfully through the gravel.

After a few moments on the ground, Marquez got to his feet and emerged largely unscathed. He should be fine for qualifying and race day, when rain and thunderstorms are forecast.

The nasty fall left Marquez down in 22nd on the timesheets, which were topped by reigning Moto GP world champion Fabio Quartararo.

Marquez topped a damp third practice session as Quartararo suffered technical problems

The Frenchman’s Yamaha cut out, just like it did in practice on Friday, but he roared back on that occasion to power to a leading time of 1 min 31.608sec.

Quartararo’s time was never threatened on Saturday in third and final practice because of the tricky conditions, after heavy downpours earlier in the day left the Mandalika circuit on the island of Lombok damp in places.

Marquez topped third practice but he failed to improve on his best time and was left well outside the top 10 overall so will need to negotiate the first qualifying session later Saturday.

Australian Jack Miller’s best practice time was sixth-fastest overall.
