Fernando Alonso has slammed rumours surrounding his future as “not funny” and promised there would be “consequences” following speculation linking him to a move to Red Bull or potential F1 retirement.

Social media lit up this week with rumours which suggested the two-time world champion could be leaving Aston Martin to join Red Bull as a replacement for Sergio Perez or that he was set to call time as an F1 driver.

The rumours have not gone down well with Alonso, who addressed them ahead of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in Brazil this weekend.

“These rumours are the normal paddock rumours from people that are just trying to make fun of it and gain some followers and this kind of thing,” Alonso told reporters in Brazil.

“But I’m not into that game.

“I don’t enjoy it (the rumours). In this room, I appreciate that all of you are journalists, professional people who have been in Formula 1 for so many years and you gain your respect and this is how it should be.

“All the rumours are coming from people that are not in this room, who are just here to make fun and I think it’s not funny when they play with anything.”

In his first season with Aston Martin, Alonso suggested the most troubling aspect to the rumours was that his loyalty to the team was being challenged.

“Of course, that’s the thing they are making,” Alonso said.

“But I will make sure there are consequences.”

Alonso, however, did not explain what those “consequences” could be.

The Spaniard made an impressive start to his 2023 campaign with Aston Martin when he finished on the podium in six out of the opening eight races.

But the team’s form has slipped since then with Alonso, who now sits fifth in the driver standings, finishing on the podium only once since the mid-season break and recording DNFs in the past two grand prix.

Addressing the team’s form, Alonso conceded no one in the team was happy with its current performances.

“We are obviously not as competitive as we wanted,” the 42-year-old said.

“We are trying to get to our best level, which is obviously not the one we are showing now. But we are analysing some of the upgrades we have brought lately.

“Here in Brazil we have a sprint format, so maybe it’s a more traditional weekend for us and we are not experimenting as much as the last two.

“Obviously we are not happy, (team principal) Mike (Krack) is not happy, no one is happy with the current form.”

But Alonso said the 2023 campaign could still be considered a “super season” overall for the team.

“This team was 250 people two years ago and now are in this transition to hopefully be a contender for the future – 800 people, new factory, seven podiums this year, 200 points more than last year,” Alonso said.

“We should not be happy but we cannot be too dramatic about the situation when this 2023 campaign has been a super season for us.”
