Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has won his home British Grand Prix for a record sixth time, stretching his lead over Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas to 39 points.

Bottas finished second, after starting from pole position with Hamilton alongside, and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was third after teammate Sebastian Vettel collided with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

The Dutch driver overtook Vettel in a masterful move around the outside before the German seemed to run into the back of Red Bull.

Vettel was penalised 10 seconds for the incident which saw both cars spin off the track on lap 38 of 52.

Verstappen still managed to finish fifth, but Vettel dropped to 16th with the damage sustained in the incident.

Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo finished in seventh position in his Renault.

It was Hamilton’s seventh win in 10 races this season and 80th of his career. He also took an extra point for the fastest lap.

The five-times world champion made the most of a brief safety car period, after Bottas had already made his pit stop, to come in for fresh tyres and then stay in the lead to the checkered flag.

“There’s so many British flags out there and every year I see it and you think you get used to it but it feels like the first time and I’m forever grateful to everyone out here I hope you enjoyed the day,” Hamilton told fans after the race.

“I couldn’t have done it without the team and everyone at the factory and their family who support them with all the time they spend away, they work so hard in their jobs.

“There’s nearly 2000 people who make this possible and I’m just a chink in the chain and I’m super proud to be a part of this.”
