One of Australia’s leading badminton players is relishing returning home to play the Victorian Open for the first time in four years this weekend.
Gronya Somerville is one of the biggest names in the sport and has represented her country at Olympics and Commonwealth Games levels.
And you can see her play with KommunityTV’s LIVE STREAM through the Herald Sun and Leader newspapers on both Saturday and Sunday. Games get under way at 9am.
Specialising in doubles, she is also a multiple gold medallist at the Oceania Championships in mixed doubles and women’s doubles.
This year will be her first Victorian Open in four years after missing the last event in 2019 and the previous two events not being held due to Covid.
“It’s definitely a lot more prestigious (than other events) everyone tries to win to get their name up on the board,” Somerville said.
“It’s a nice thing to have.”
Somerville is a champion in both mixed doubles and women’s doubles at the event but has never got her name on the board in singles.
She stopped playing singles at the age of 17.

The 27-year-old comes back to the Open in the best form of her life and with new doubles partners with her.
After the recent Olympics in Tokyo, she lost her mixed and doubles partners to retirement and has had to find new ones to continue playing.
This weekend she will partner Kenneth Choo, who helped her win the Oceania Championships earlier this year, in the mixed doubles.
In women’s doubles, she’ll partner with her local teammate Joyce Chung, who is a current Oceania Championships gold medallist.
She will have another partner for national and international competition.
“It’s definitely been a rollercoaster, the Olympics were a highlight, but both my partners stopped and the transition has been tough,” Somerville said.
“I didn’t know if I could find (replacements) but these two partners have been good so far.
“The next big goal is to qualify for the Olympics again.”
Somerville said the Victorian Open will be vital in preparing for the chance to play in Paris 2024.
She said the focus would be on her game and using her strengths of her pace and positioning to punish her rivals with winning shots.
Her experience will also be vital.
“My experience comes through in these tournaments where I can people get into set plays,” she said.
“Then I can hit a winner.”
Somerville said it would be fantastic to get people to the event and also watching through KommunityTV.
“I think my mum will come and watch,” she said.
“It’s a good chance for people to watch us.”
The tournament begins on Saturday and finishes on Sunday.
