Preview: Casey’s unique gameplan for rest of VNL season
With seven matches remaining in the VNL season and the reality of Casey Demons featuring in the finals slim, Championship coach Steve Murray has set his side a peculiar task for the rest of 2023.
Murray has requested his side make, and then learn from, mistakes during matches.
He feels if the Demons are making mistakes, they are not only taking the game on but being forced to work hard to bounce back from them.
The unique mindset appears to be working for the eighth-placed Dees, who have won two of their last three and have an opportunity to make it three from four when they take on seventh-placed Melbourne University Lightning on Wednesday.
The match between the Demons and Lightning will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as a part of a VNL match-of-the-round triple header. See the schedule below.
Murray said the encouragement to make mistakes has come easily after complete buy in from the playing group.
“We want to keep building on what we’re doing now. That’s taking each game at a time and applying our brand of netball,” he said.
“It’s just a change of mindset and the ability to go out there, play netball and work as a group.
“I guess it’s us playing our own brand of netball and working with each other, backing each other and making mistakes.
“We know they’re going to happen; we just don’t dwell on them and move on and keep attacking.
“We encourage them to make mistakes and then don’t dwell on it, we ask them to make mistakes because then it means they’re trying.
“It’s a team mentality that someone is going to make a mistake, so we pull together and fix it together.”
With two wins from their past three matches, the Demons won’t get lost searching for a dramatic change come Wednesday.
Instead, Murray will ask for a 10 per cent of growth from each player.
“Our focus is to keep doing what we have been doing for the last three weeks,” he said.
“Everything that we’re doing, we just have to do it just 10 per cent better every time we hit the court.
“Emma Ryde has been fantastic for us in goals and then we have had Chaise Vassallo in our mid court as well, she has been really solid.
“Those two have made a huge difference and then you have some really good experience with Sharni Lambden and Tayla Honey.
“Hopefully we can back it up again and have a good win.”
